Two-steps algorithm for computing the inverse solution of electrocardiography

This study addresses the non-invasive localization of cardiac abnormalities, specifically premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), through a newly proposed two-stage inversion solution for a dipole cardiac source. One of the inputs for solving the inversion problem is the surface potentials measured using a large number (128) of electrodes placed on the patient’s chest (called surface mapping). In this work, we evaluated the significance of each electrode using our proposed “greedy” algorithm and in a second step we solved the inverse problem using only the significant electrodes. The results revealed inter-patient variability in the importance of surface electrodes. By comparing localization error values, we demonstrated that accurate localization of PVCs can be achieved using a carefully selected subset (e.g., 64) of electrodes. These results highlight the potential of using a reduced number of electrodes to solve the inversion problem, which would make it possible to implement a more convenient and patient-friendly surface mapping method. The results are part of a dissertation that will be submitted by the end of 2023.
