Professor RNDr. Lubomír Kubáček, DrSc. Has Passed Away

On 16 February 2026, at the age of 95, Professor RNDr. Lubomír Kubáček, DrSc., passed away. He was the founder of the Slovak school of mathematical statistics, a long-time researcher and director of the Institute of Mathematics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and a prominent figure in Slovak and Czech mathematics. He was also a long-standing researcher, founder, and first head of the Department of Theoretical Methods at the Institute of Measurement of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (then the Institute of Measurement Theory of the SAS). The final farewell will take place on Thursday, 19 February 2026, at 8:45 a.m. at the Bratislava crematorium.

Professor Kubáček was born on 1 February 1931 in Bratislava. After graduating in geodesy from the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Slovak University of Technology in 1954, he worked at the Geodetic Institute in Bratislava. However, he broadened his professional focus by studying mathematics—at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University he earned a diploma in mathematical analysis (1957), followed by one in probability and mathematical statistics (1964).

In 1962 he joined the Institute of Measurement Theory of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, where he worked until 1981, among other roles as head of the Department of Theoretical Methods. It was here that his scientific and teaching activities fully developed. In 1980 he obtained the Doctor of Sciences (DrSc.) degree. In the 1970s he was involved in founding the PROBASTAT conference series, which became an important international platform in probability and mathematical statistics.

Even under difficult social conditions, Professor Kubáček systematically built a professional community and educated young mathematicians and statisticians. His regular professional seminars became the foundation for forming a strong “statistical school” in Slovakia. Many of his students and collaborators later established themselves as respected scientists at home and abroad.

From 1981 he worked at the Institute of Mathematics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, which he directed from 1988 to 1991. In 1991 he was appointed professor. He was a corresponding member of both the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, an honorary member of the Learned Society of Slovakia, and a recipient of the honorary degree Dr.h.c. from the Slovak University of Technology.

In 1995 he moved to Palacký University in Olomouc, where he established a new department of mathematical statistics and supervised more than 18 doctoral students. After returning to Bratislava in 2013, he remained an active and respected member of the professional community.

His scientific work is exceptionally extensive and profoundly influenced the development of linear and mixed linear models, especially with applications in geodesy, geophysics, medical research, and measurement theory. He authored or co-authored several scientific monographs, more than 130 research articles in mathematical and statistical journals, and dozens of works focused on applications. His results have been cited in hundreds of scientific publications. A significant part of his research was carried out in collaboration with his wife, Ludmila Kubáčková (1934–2004), who was his close professional partner.

Professor Kubáček was not only an outstanding scientist but also a person of natural authority, clear analytical thinking, and an exceptional ability to formulate the essence of a problem with remarkable precision. His work significantly contributed to linking mathematical statistics with measurement theory and metrological applications, thereby permanently influencing the professional profile of our institute as well.

The Institute of Measurement of the Slovak Academy of Sciences respectfully and gratefully commemorates his scientific contribution, his pedagogical work, and the personal support he provided to several generations of researchers.

Honor to his memory.
