The effect of the method of preparation of gelenite glasses (2CaO-Al2O3-SiO2) doped with Bi was investigated. The glasses in question were prepared by a combination of flame synthesis and solid-phase reaction and a rapid cooling method. The obtained knowledge can be used in the preparation of both gelenite glasses and glass-ceramics, since glass-ceramics are produced by controlled crystallization of the glasses. As a result of our research, the influence of the preparation method significantly affects the structure as well as the magnetic properties of Bi doped gelenite glasses. In terms of magnetic properties, glasses prepared by flame synthesis from precursor powders that were prepared by solid-phase reaction have complex magnetic properties where diamagnetic, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic components of magnetization were present. The glasses prepared by the rapid cooling method exhibited diamagnetic and paramagnetic properties. The complexity of the magnetic properties was also associated with a more complicated structure of the glasses prepared by flame synthesis. From a practical point of view, this means that by choosing the method of preparation of Bi-doped gelenite glasses we can already set the necessary properties in advance.

Fig.: ZFC/FC curves of Bi-doped gelenite glasses fused by (a) flame synthesis (b) fast cooling method.
