{"id":3059,"date":"2022-12-10T09:01:22","date_gmt":"2022-12-10T08:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.um.sav.sk\/en\/?p=3059"},"modified":"2023-01-10T09:35:33","modified_gmt":"2023-01-10T08:35:33","slug":"2-x-ray-microtomography-in-forensic-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.um.sav.sk\/en\/selected-results\/2-x-ray-microtomography-in-forensic-science\/","title":{"rendered":"X-ray microtomography in forensic science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The measurement and 3D imaging method of high-resolution X-ray microtomography &#8211; microCT developed at the SAV Measurement Institute has been successfully used in forensic science.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In the close cooperation of ten scientific, university and criminological workplaces, the influence of the action of concentrated acid on the loss of dental mass, various selected dental fillings and bones was investigated using microCT, FTIR and other modern analytical methods with the use of artificial intelligence algorithms.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">An important part of the design of the measurement methodology was the optimization of the physical parameters of CT scans, especially in the case of amalgam fillings from the point of view of suppressing the appearance of reconstruction artifacts, which could significantly affect the resulting uncertainty of the measurements during the segmentation of the 3D image and the subsequent quantification of the segmented volumes.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">This research was primarily motivated by the investigation of a serious crime by the National Criminal Agency last year, when the Institute of Measurement with the microtomographic method of measurement was significantly involved in documenting this crime.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The results of the work were published in the scientific journal Molecules (Q1), registered in Current Contents.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Projects: COST CA 17121, COST CA 16101<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Publication in CC magazine:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>THURZO, A. \u2013 JAN\u010cOVI\u010cOV\u00c1, V. \u2013 HAIN, M. \u2013 THURZO, M. \u2013 NOV\u00c1K, B. \u2013 KOSN\u00c1\u010cOV\u00c1, H. \u2013 LEHOTSK\u00c1, V. \u2013 VARGA, I. \u2013 KOV\u00c1\u010c, P. \u2013 MORAVANSK\u00dd, N.
